Shetland, located 130 miles north of the mainland, is not connected to the UK energy grid.
It produces all of its own energy, which its 22,000 residents use to heat their homes and businesses.
Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution maintains the electricity network for the residents of Shetland. And to help make the island’s electricity supply more efficient and reliable it is delivering a innovative project, called the Northern Isles New Energy Solution, or NINES for short.
So, what is NINES?
SHEPD has created a smart grid. A smart grid uses different technologies to automatically balance the electricity network taking the energy produced and distributing it to its customers when it is required. Ensuring there is a constant reliable supply..
