ENGLISH description for "Denmark on the prairie".
In the middle of the Iowa prairie lies a small town unlike any other. Elk Horn is America’s largest Danish settlement and still today has a phone book full of Danish names like Hansen, Rasmussen, Jensen, Olsen and Nielsen. The town even has its own king and queen, just like Denmark.
But the “Danishness” is slowly fading as the old Danes die and the young ones move to the cities.
“Denmark on the Prairie” is a touching and quirky portrait of Elk Horn and the people’s struggle to keep it Danish. How long will this little Denmark on the prairie survive? And will the charismatic mayor Stan Jens learn to speak Danish in time for his big opening speech at the annual culture festival only weeks away?
