Over 5000 images files taken to capture two Black Swallowtail caterpillars undergoing pupation.
The setup is shown in the video. I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM lens, and some lights. I used an off-market time-lapse device connected to the camera to capture one frame every 30 seconds. I batch processed the images to 1920X1080 pixels with global batch enhancements in LR3. I used Virtualdub to create the time-lapse at a frame rate of 5fps. Finally I used Sony Vegas 9 to create the final cut.
The entire family has been really engaged in this project. A special thanks goes out to Tracey Ambrose who gave us a few first-instar caterpillars along with some parsley (the caterpillar host plant).
We hope to continue this fun past-time. Now hopefully I can catch the emergence of the butterflies for a time-lapse!
