Safety and risk assessment is a topic of critical importance that spans all sectors of tourism. In the growing sector of Voluntourism/Volunteerism, sending and host organisations have a need for identifying and adhering to ‘best practice’ principles for the prevention, assessment and management of risks associated with volunteerism. In this context, the responsibilities of sending and host organisations will be identified. One case study each from a sending and host organisation, respectively, will be given as working examples of ‘best practice’ safety and risk assessment, followed by an action checklist for all attendees to work through.
The goals of the session are aimed at helping sending and host organisations to identify strengths and weaknesses within their own operations with the intent of promoting improved safety and risk assessment procedures within Voluntourism/Volunteerism.
