The best way to get a convincing wood texture is still to photograph it or find actual imagery, but sometimes you're limited to resolution, variety, or actual access to good maps.
This little tutorial demonstrates a way to generate wood grain textures procedurally and completely from scratch, using very basic tools already included in any version of After Effects. You're not limited to resolution, detail. coverage, or variety, and you can create bump, spec, and color/diffuse maps.
