While WW1, the turnip became substitution for potatoes in Germany as the potato harvest in 1916 was a failure. The potato was the basic food these days. As there were also made several other substitutions f.e. turnip marmelade, turnip coffee (which were used by government order) and the bad image as cattle-food the turnip got unpopular and a synonym for war and distress.
These days are gone, time to rediscover it for our days.
