Some history: The music heard are well known in the Greek society - the lyrics describe som aspects of the old conflict with the Turks. The march style is in rememberence of the soldiers roles in the conflict with the Turks.
The white soldiers skirt is called Foustanella (φουστανέλα), a cotton kilt made from 30 meters (98 feet) of white cloth, with 400 pleats (Greek: πιέτες), representing the 400 years of Ottoman occupation.
The food coocked in the ground and covered by vegitation and dirt was made such that the enemy should not see any open fire while making food. The name derives from the traditional skirt, κλέφτες, kleftiko
