Poprishkin, a low ranking, civil servant with ideas above his station has fallen in love with the Director’s daughter. Coupled with delusions of grandeur and an inability to accept his position in life, this
obsession acts as catalyst that sets him on the road to madness.
From talking dogs exchanging letters to imagining himself to be the King of Spain, his gradual decline into madness is both absurdly funny and heartbreakingly tragic.
Adapted from the short story by Nicholai Gogol, the film is made up of 20 individual diary entries, each one shot in a continuous take and lasting between 40 seconds and 7 minutes – An incredible challenge for both actor and cameraman.
The result is a beautifully shot and stunningly performed portrait of one man’s journey into insanity. Intimate, authentic and ultimately very moving…
This is Oddbodies’ first feature-length film. Previous short films include the award-winning Mrs Lustleigh’s Fancies, The Nature of Angrove and A Penny For Them.
