IT'S AN OTTOMAN, but not as we know it. Architect Ian McChesney has turned sculptor for this extraordinary piece of seating, sited in the atrium of the recently-completed Angel Building in London by AHMM for Derwent London.
Inspired by Lyle’s black treacle pouring from a spoon, the piece is titled Out of the Strong Came Forth Sweetness, the Book of Judges quotation found on the treacle tins. Made of carbon fibre by Isle of Wight boat builders, the black leather-upholstered seating area spreads from a 22m long angled needle that rises the full height of the atrium. Pinpoint accuracy was needed to position the needle.
