Chicago Black & White Music Video Director Behind The Scenes
I took this opportunity to deploy my Filmtools car mount rig and while I shot most of the video with my Canon C100, I decided to use my Canon 5D Mark III for these shots, because I could shoot the footage in RAW by using MagicLantern’s firmware. This turned out to be very helpful because it allowed me to bring up the reflection in the car a full stop while preserving the highlights in the rest of the scene.
There were many shots where I wanted a visceral feel that made the viewer feel like they were there so for those moments I hand held the camera. You can see these shots in the car and the closing sequence.
In the middle of filming I bough a DJI Ronin M, Which is a three axis stabilizer. This new piece of equipment is phenomenal. For the last few years I have used a Glidecam HD-4000 and a Smooth Shooter vest for the last few years, and while it did a god job, I always felt restrained because I couldn’t make smooth vertical movements. However, the Ronin can stabilize the camera no matter which way I want to move it! You can see the Ronin shots when Caleb is walking through the tunnel in Chicago and while writing his letter at the end.
