About the Klinse‐Za Pen program: From March 16th – 18th 2016 a team led by the West Moberly and Saulteau First Nations, safely captured 14 caribou cows and transported them to the Klinse‐Za Maternal Pen. The goal of the First Nations partners is to prevent the extirpation of this endangered caribou herd by protecting pregnant cows and their vulnerable young from excessive predation during calving season. This pen will be home for these cows through their pregnancies and until the calves are at least 6 weeks old when they will all be released back into the wild. The caribou settled in quickly to the pen. Since 2014 the herd has expanded from 36 caribou to 55 animals partly due to the success of the Klinse‐Za Pen program.
