In this short video we practice Nadi Sodhana or Alternate Nostril Breathing. This simple breathing exercise helps us calm the mind, energize the body, and balance the left & right hemispheres of the brain. It lowers heart rate reducing stress and anxiety. We release accumulated tension & fatigue and purify the energy channels of the body. This breathing exercise helps us to relax the mind to prepare for meditation.
Nadi Sodhana is both calming and energizing. When we are breathing through our left nostril we are activating out parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for our "rest & digest" stage, which is very calming. When we are breathing into our right nostril we are activating our sympathetic nervous system which regulates our body's unconcious actions, our "fight-or-flight" response which increases our energy levels. When breathing through both nostrils we are creating the perfect harmony between calming and energizing.
