The Patterns’ Vicious Influence uses wallpaper as a conceptual vehicle to discuss the way language saturates our environment and imprints itself onto our peripheries. We have designed a series of wallpaper patterns using specific words to build each pattern. These patterns are built from words that are used to diminish women in order to reveal the bad habits that have been ingrained in our collective language. This language is a symptom of a long-established patriarchal society; it is insidious and causes lasting harm.
“This paper looks to me as if it KNEW what a vicious influence it had.”
-The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
SPOOKY BOOBS COLLECTIVE is a feminist collective that uses art, language, and design to visualize the trivialization of women’s experiences. They believe in the power of design and the strength of printed material to promote social awareness and change. Pulling from the history of design and print, SBC creates controversial art installations.
