A Gekko Studio video from the peatlands of Riau, Sumatra, where Siemenpuu's Indonesian partner organization JMGR works.
PT NSP is a subsidiary of PT Sampoerna Agro Tbk, which has a plantation concession license from the Ministry of Forestry in 2009, covering 21,418 hectare area. All of the trees on the land were cut down for sago plantation. Canals were built by the company as the transportation line and barrier between the blocks. Lukun village, in the sub-district of Tebing Tinggi Timur, district of Kepulauan Meranti, Riau Province is one of the villages adjacent to PT NSP. The district is one of the outermost islands in Indonesia, which directly borders with Malaysia and Singapore. The land of Lukun village has become a victim of the company canals. Lukun village was well known with its peatland. Throughout the year, people in the Lukun village have never been short of water. But now, with the company canals, people have to suffer from drought and water shortages. Peatland that previously very humid becomes dry, like the dust.
