We won the Polartec Grant! Thank you so much for your support and your votes. 10,900 votes in three weeks - incredible! Thank you so much again!
With the $10,000 we WON from Polartec, Appalachian State University's Outdoor Programs will start a scholarship fund for the hundreds of Appalachian students who desire to become involved in Outdoor Programs. This scholarship fund will positively impact Appalachian State’s community in three major ways.
First, this Polartec scholarship fund will encourage students – all students – to get outside. We believe diversity and Inclusiveness promotes greater self-discovery, group development, compassion, exploration and learning. Although we keep costs low as it is, we believe this scholarship will reduce the financial barriers and constraints that keep some students from getting outdoors and on those adventures.
Secondly, the Polartec scholarship fund will provide our skilled outdoor enthusiasts with top-notch leadership training. Our Instructor Development Program is currently training over 100 students to become skilled outdoor leaders. Student who have graduated from IDP gain a variety of outdoor instruction experience. Many of these students aim to work as professionals in the outdoor field. We’d provide merit based scholarships for our outstanding student leaders to get certified in numerous outdoor fields: rock site management, boating certifications, minimum impact techniques, Swiftwater Rescue…. The professional leadership and training opportunities are as varied as the students themselves.
Finally, the Polartec scholarship fund will give students a chance to explore the outdoors around the world while practicing environmental stewardship and service. We currently offer three, month long, international service-based trips to Wales, New Zealand, and Peru. Students on these trips serve the communities they travel to. They also learn about environmental stewardship and sustainability practices that are in place all over the world. When they return, students reduce or negate their carbon footprints by planting trees, buying carbon offsets, and teaching others about sustainability in the outdoors. The Polartec scholarship will provide much-needed funds for more students to participate in these incredible international opportunities.
This $10,000 money we will will serve as the starting point for a permanent Outdoor Programs Scholarship Fund. We will continue to build the scholarship through ongoing donations from outdoor programs student alumni, students, staff, and the Appalachian community.
