From the Inside/OUT! (2000)

Lorna Boschman

The narrators of this award-winning video trace their journey from confinement and segregation to life in the community, as they became pioneers of the first successful effort in Canada to close large institutions for people with developmental disabilities. From the Inside/OUT! is based on a unique and powerful art show created by 28 survivors of institutions who worked in collaboration with artist Persimmon Blackbridge. Through a rich tapestry of images and spoken memories, the video eloquently presents the case against institutionalization while providing a remarkable testament to courage, endurance, dignity and creativity.

Challenging, provocative and moving, From the Inside/OUT! contributes to an important but little known chapter in Canadian social history - the move to include people with developmental disabilities within the community.
