Written as the final piece for Chris’s year-long composer residency with Club Inégales, Different Kind of Scene is a fully scored contemporary classical piece that allows room for optional free improvisation as well as jazz soloing over a comp section. Notes Inégales, the club’s house band who performed the premiere, frequently practice their own kind of free group improvisation, during which they depart from the written score and instead improvise under the leadership of a conductor, who shapes the direction and instrumentation of the improvisation with gestures. In this score, the musicians are invited to explore the previous musical material in this manner whenever the sign appears. Only occasionally have I provided specific materials to start the improvisations with. The result is a lyrical, yet jazzy piece that seamlessly blends the scored and the improvised.
