This feature-length documentary film tells the story of the Czech composer, lyricist, piano player and singer, Filip Topol, whose work touched three generations of listeners. The music of Filip Topol is so different from the music for the masses in the West, that there was constant interest in it at the most prestigious music festivals. His band Psí vojáci played differently than all the other bands in the world. We can find their CDs in music shop catalogues from New York to Tokyo. After the fall of the iron curtain they performed in many European countries, in the USA and in Japan. When they played in the New York club the Knitting Factory, the reviewer for the New York Press wrote:
“They play music that leaves an almost unbearable ache in your chest, honest music you rarely hear outside the blues.”
The charismatic and multitalented artist first started garnering wider attention when he was only thirteen years old. Václav Havel stood at the beginning of Filip’s musical career. When he learned that Filip was not allowed to perform in Prague’s Rubín Theatre because he was the son of a well-known dissident, the playwright Josef Topol, he invited Filip to perform in the barn at his cottage in Hrádeček, where he organised concerts. Thus Filip’s first performance took place alongside The Plastic People of The Universe and augured his future.
In Communist Czechoslovakia his need for free expression soon got him unwanted notice and thus for the next ten years Filip and his young band were forced to shift to the alternative environment of the underground scene. The film uncovers how Filip Topol’s life and attitude reflected the period before and after the Velvet Revolution, his obsession with music and love for Mozart as well as his serious illness. The entire film is permeated with Filip Topol’s songs, which he called his diaries, along with his short stories, complemented by the comments and memories of the companions and friends that touched his life. Last, but not least, it contains recordings from unique archives of interviews with the star of the show himself, many of which have never been released before.
