Drummer and percussionist Sameer Gupta’s latest Motema Music release Namaskar pays tribute to the great Bollywood soundtracks of Indian cinema, but also fuses classical Indian music with modern jazz. Gupta is a pioneer of playing straight ahead jazz while playing classical Indian music on the tabla.
A member of the highly popular Marc Cary Focus Trio, both he and Cary produced “Namaskar” to rave reviews and critical success. The two have played together for well over a decade and the CD features some of country’s best Indian Raga musicians. Featured on the disc are Rashaan Carter (bass), Neel Murgai (sitar), Arun Ramamurthy (violin), Marc Cary (piano, rhodes), and Sameer on drums/tabla. Also on the disc is David Ewell (bass), Prasant Radhakrishnan (sax), David Boyce (sax, bass clarinet), Srinivas Reddy (sitar), Charith Premawardanan (viola), and Black Edgar (musicbox, effects)
Sameer was a student of Pt Anindo Chatterjee, one of the famed tabla musicians as well as instructors.
Currently, Sameer is playing with is unit along with the Marc Cary Focus Trio. He teaches music part of the Carnegie Hall’s Global Encounters program and holds workshops on Indian Raga music as well as the tabla.
