Less than two per cent of Brazilian people donate blood regularly.
But this number could be much higher.
The ministry of health determines that men that have had sexual intercourse with other men in the last twelve months cannot donate their blood.
To bring up discussion about this subject, we chose the greatest LGBT Parade in the world and used its greatest icon: The rainbow flag.
We put more red on the flag so we can put more red in the blood Banks. An action that reverberated immediately, taking over Brazil’s mainstream media.
The campaign reached the largest LGBT parades in the country
We received support from one of the most renowned and respected doctors in Brazil: Dr. Dráuzio Varella. Plus dozens of politicians… celebrities and more than thirty NGOs
We pressed the Ministry of Health for changes. We handed in a document that defended the end of the restriction.
And the Public Defenders Office recommended the revision of the law, making way for a Public Hearing, which has the same name as our movement: BLOOD EQUALITY.
