Artist Statement: "All wars are the result of a failure to grieve." - Martin Prechtel. The power of imagination and creativity can lift us out of modes of oppression and conflict. One can heal through creativity and transcend disputes and anger, journey to new places of peace and wonder that still hold strong emotion and sadness but are driven by the vital energy of the unexpected in creativity and personal expression.
"A Little Wonder" was commissioned for Six Scents Parfums, an interdisciplinary collaboration between contemporary artists and fashion designers. Six Scents Series Three is an exploration into the nature of childhood memories and the influence of adolescence on identity. Created by a distinct group of designers, artists and perfumers, these limited edition fragrances are designed to represent a global range of contemporary views on creativity and culture. Each of the films for Series Three portray the unavoidable transition from innocence to experience. "A Little Wonder", by Rainer Judd, is beautiful short film explores imagination and creativity as a passageway out of an environment of conflict.
A portion of the proceeds from Six Scents Series Three will be donated to War Child International (warchild.ca). War Child works with children all over the world to reduce poverty, to provide education and to defend their rights. They work tirelessly to help children whose lives have been torn apart by conflict, providing them with the means to build a brighter future.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Rainer Judd is an actor, filmmaker and artist. Currently she is in development with her feature film project, All I Remember. Both the feature project and her short film Remember Back, Remember When (2008) are autobiographical. She recently completed the short film, A Little Wonder, as part of the Six Scents Series Three perfume project. Rainer has directed short films and worked in production with directors such as Francis Coppola, Neil Burger, Terry Gilliam, and Gus Van Sant. As an actor she has worked with directors such as Janusz Kaminski, Michael Rhymer, Peter Chelsom, Peter Hyams, Robert Downey Sr. A graduate of NYU Film, her thesis short film Plague Circuit won the Texas Award at the USA Film Festival. In 2007 she was a recipient of Art Production Fund’s Artist Residency Grant at the Fondation Claude Monet in Giverny, France. Rainer’s drawings and photos have been in group exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, and Austin.
Rainer has served as Board President of JUDD Foundation since 2003. Founded by her father, the late artist Donald Judd, JUDD Foundation promotes understanding of and access to his work. She also serves on the Board of Blue Ocean Institute, founded by marine biologist Dr. Carl Safina to inspire a closer relationship with the sea through science, art, and literature.
