"To the Left of the Dial: College Radio in the US," by Elizabeth Hansen
When you hear the term 'college radio,' what does it bring to mind? Although it could technically apply to any university-owned radio station, the term is usually associated with student-run stations featuring eclectic programming, independent music and amateur DJs. But in our post-internet society, college radio's role as a musical tastemaker is changing. Elizabeth will explore the history of university-owned radio, the emergence of "college radio" and the current state of student-run radio in the US.
Elizabeth Hansen is a museum professional and former college radio music director and DJ. She is currently developing the College Radio Archive (collegeradioarchive.org), a crowd-sourced collection of audio, video and images relating to college radio.
