I found some old footage of me when I visited the Philippines when I was about 4 years old. My parents would take us back to visit family and friends. They also had the intent for us to understand how different life was outside of the US -- not better or worse just different. The trips were always full of joy and beauty, and have always given me a better understanding of myself.
This lead me to review some of my other life events, and reflect on the different communities that have effected my world view.
I played football with my Samoan friends. My friends taught me to dance different traditional Polynesian dances that we would perform at parties and rallies. When I went to UC Santa Barbara, I was recruited by a Polynesian Dance group, because someone in my dorm overheard I used to dance. My senior year I was president of the club and at one of the events I helped organized is where I met my wife.
That all ties back to me being a kid finding his joy in the Philippines and loving to dance.
