Growing up, my mother used to always buy skin whitening products to lighten me up. It never worked. In castings looking for "authentic Koreans," I've been told that I don't look Korean to play Korean. Despite having grown up in Seoul until I was 16 and usually feeling like the most Korean person in the room, I've always felt the pressure to defend my Korean-ness in order to qualify my place in the audition. But of course I don't qualify for southeast Asian roles either or any other "authentic" anything for that matter. Too tan, not tan enough; I've looked like an Asian without a nation all my life. So, here's to that (and also for giggles).
