This was a way to address a problem that really had no good way to fix it. It was typically in patients who had an infected tricuspid valve. The valve would be destroyed and we would have no option but to rebuild it. Sometimes these are young people in whom the options of either a standard tissue valve or a mechanical valve requiring very high anticoagulation [blood thinning] – neither of those are very attractive. Furthermore, the material – CorMatrix Extracellular Matrix – appears to resist infection to some degree. It is less likely to become infected than some other materials.
