Shana King works as a parent mentor for the Indian Child Welfare Act Law Center in Minneapolis. Every day she meets with, counsels and supports parents struggling to maintain or regain custody of their children. Her own background - growing up in foster care, dealing with substance abuse, losing custody of her kids and fighting to be reunited with her family - gives hundreds of parents the hope that they can overcome the incredible obstacles of their lives and have a better future.

The importance of keeping native families together, of providing culturally appropriate services and engaging with with traditional heritage is critical to healing the deep wounds caused by generational trauma. Shana's generosity of spirit, her openness and warmth shines a light for all the parents and children whose lives she touches.
