This year’s commencement speaker was Emmanuel Alumnus Phillip Bowen (’98), current Chief Executive Officer of In Touch Ministries based in Atlanta. He shared with graduates a story from his time at Emmanuel and how one conversation changed his outlook. (Read more below and full article at ec.edu/news/congratulations-ecs-class-2016).
Former EC Dean of Students, Dr. Ed Henson, shared with Mr. Bowen during his freshman year the importance of following the right path, to the right place, at the right time and, how, through doing that, his time at Emmanuel would be successful and yield success.
“The path you take is determined by the priority you make,” he stated. “And because your college degree comes with no promises, what can you count on?”
Mr. Bowen referenced Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount saying, “If you will put Him (God) first in your life, He will make sure that you have everything that you need.”
He asked graduates to shift their thinking, focusing on the journey they take to get to their destination, and the people they meet along the way. He said getting to the right destination meant learning how to value and serve the people around you.
Mr. Bowen referenced Proverbs 11:25, saying, “Whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” He added to the graduates, “For the last four years, you have been refreshed by a wonderful staff and faculty.
“Now it’s your time to go and refresh,” he added.
