'Through The Forest' is my short homage to the British/Canadian Oscar-winning experimental film-maker Norman McLaren.
During a hugely impressive career spanning several decades McLaren perfected the technique of cameraless, drawn-on-film animation, and often etched directly on the films audio track to create accompanying sound elements. I adore his abstract, audio-driven animation, and my piece is specifically influenced by McLaren's 1971 film, 'Synchromy': nfb.ca/film/synchromy
This video is also a tribute to the National Film Board of Canada, the organization that McLaren worked with for a large part of his career and one that continues to break ground today. More information on McLaren and examples of his work can be found on the NFB website: nfb.ca/explore-all-directors/norman-mclaren/
The audio track by Ben Landis (from which Through The Forest gets its name) was generously released online in separate sections to allow others to remix it. As well as it being my favourite track on his 'Adventures in Pixels' album, Ben's remix pack made interpreting the audio into visual elements a breeze.
