Four WWII Warbirds fly over the Waldron Bridge that connects Fort Pierre and Pierre. These aircraft flew as part of a Memorial Flight to honor WWII hero of the Battle of Midway, John C. Waldron.
Waldron was a South Dakotan of Oglala-Lakota heritage. He led Torpedo 8 on the ill-fated but ultimately battle-winning attack on the Japanese fleet on June 4, 1942.
In the video, two P-51 Mustang fighters, an FM-2/F4F Wildcat fighter and TBM Avenger torpedo bomber took part in the homage that culminated in the unveiling of a memorial to Waldron and Torpedo 8 at the Pierre Regional Airport.
THANK YOU Texas Flying Legends, Tim McPherson, Fargo Air Museum and pilots Casey Odegaard, Paul Ehlen, Mark Yaggie and Warren Peitsch. Also special thanks to Mustang Aviation, Pierre, SD for the camera plane.
