As part of my research into the life and work of Manchester Poet Joe Smythe a recent visit to the North West Film Archive at the Manchester Metropolitan University has unearthed this item. It has burnt in time-code.
It is one of two poems read by Joe and transmitted on BBC's Look North West in 1980 to publicise the launch of his book "The Peoples Road". The title plays with the phrase as both a statement of fact - the UK's railways had been deliberately run down for decades and also "An Old Line" railway workers have heard it all before from a succession of 'gaffers'
The full poem can be read on my website and includes the ironic and prophetic lines
" Gaffers are building a High Speed Train
With nowhere to go but faster. "
