Documentation of Victoria Walters one day event at The Time Machine in Fringe arts Bath, 2016.
This installation is a form of conversation with the German 20th century artist Joseph Beuys and a response to the critical tipping point we are facing with respect to climate change. Pots of flowers are installed on a table raised on a podium in the manner of a press conference, with table-top microphones set up by each to capture their ‘speech’. Transfusion tubes extend from the pots, transferring soil onto the ground. Rather than a separately defined area called “sustainability”, the radical ecology of Beuys’ approach conceived the dynamic interconnections between living beings and the earth as a Wärmezeitmaschine (“Warmth-time machine”) that could be actively worked with. The installation recalls this aspect of the artist’s thinking and his expanded notion of art.
