Rahiba Rahimi is a political science student at the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul. She is one of a new generation of Afghans who are helping modernize the country. Like other young Afghans, Rahiba has embraced liberal ideas pertaining to gender equality and human rights — she is actually living these ideals. Rahiba, who is only 22, studies international relations and has participated in Model United Nations — but her passion is fashion. Rahiba had two main fashion influences growing up: women's magazines and the Internet as well as her mother, who wore beautiful traditional Afghan clothing. Last year, Rahiba created the Laman Clothing fashion house in Kabul, as an alternative to the dour, oppressive burka and modest, dark clothing women currently wear. Rahiba celebrates traditional Afghan fashion, which is extravagant, with bright colours and complex crocheted designs that celebrate life and the beauty of women. Rahiba and her fashion house, Laman Clothing, are featured in the documentary Mightier Than The Sword, which will premiere this fall in Vancouver, Canada. (Please note that this is raw footage...the documentary, obviously, will be finessed, with properly edited sound, colour correction, music, etc.) Thanks for watching!
