“I began to think that (the hand) had some kind of a special charge which came from the many contradictions and complications that it contained. The hand is a ruin... and like all ruins, it speaks of the past by invoking our distance from it.”
On May 28, 2016, PLATFORM welcomed Toronto artist Annie MacDonnell who delivered a 28 minute talk in the gallery in conjunction with the group show "The Time Travellers".
The talk centres around her exhibited work The Fortune Teller, a video that focuses on a poetically rich found object: the cast resin hand from an arcade fortune-telling machine. In the talk, MacDonell offers fascinating insight into her process, sharing the rigorous and exploratory path she took to arrive at the final work.
