You can be in two places at once, at once present and absent, inside and out. Off-balance between an interior somewhere else that is volatile and fragile, and the vital weight of the earth. A little detachment allows us to watch our movements from the outside in, to eliminate weight, to attenuate the present which by its nature transforms itself continuously into the past.
At the same time, detachment separates, creates distance, pain. If the pain coming from the loss of parts of us did not go away, and didn't transform into a kind of liberation, it would be insupportable, and would dissolve our body into a kind of total silence. Is the present to which we try to adhere as volatile as the "somewhere else" in which we guard our most remote thoughts?
