The semi-desert of northern Namibia is one of the black rhino's last retreats. A solitary and sometimes aggressive creature, the black rhino can be extremely elusive in the true wild - as I found out. Fewer than five thousand still survive, outside of zoos. In Namibia they face the combined threat of poaching and the worst drought in decades.
This was made for the UN. I shot and edited it myself. I travelled with Ariel, who makes a brief appearance late in the piece.
PS the opening prehistoric scenes from Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey used shots from Namibia. The second shot in this piece is of the Spitzkoppe peaks, which were the backdrop to that movie's opening.
