Free the Slaves creates a dramatic movie to be played with a mobile cinema unit to build awareness about slavery in remote villages and to inspire community action to overcome it. This film depicts how common family financial difficulties force vulnerable villagers to take out loans that propel them into debt bondage slavery. The film shows how those trapped in slavery can escape through collective community action.
Filmed and edited entirely on location in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Created by Free the Slaves, Search for Common Ground and Collywood Productions -- with the collaboration of the Congolese community groups ASSODIP, JPT and CREDDHO. Funded by the U.S. State Department Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and Open Square.
