Former Archbishop John Nienstedt left the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis under criminal investigation and in bankruptcy. Nienstedt not only failed to protect children in the archdiocese, the FOX 9 Investigators discovered he failed to protect a child in his own family. Forty years ago, in a case that foreshadows Nienstedt's role in the church sex abuse crisis, he failed to report the abuse of his cousin's son at the hands of one of his best friends from seminary. Nienstedt, who at the time was a young priest, not only failed to tell law enforcement, he didn't even report it to the church hierarchy. That priest, Father Sam Ritchey, would go on to abuse at least three other boys. The story was recognized with a regional Emmy and regional Murrow for Investigative Reporting. Originally broadcast on FOX 9, KMSP-TV, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota, on May 4, 2016.
