High speed camera footage of diesel combustion within one chamber of the X-mini 70cc engine. The X-mini was originally designed for gasoline / Spark Ignited application. However, funded by the DoD, the company investigated the feasibility of Compression Ignition of Diesel fuel. Shown here is a chamber at 14:1 compression ratio; the engine is running at 7000 RPM (very high speed for diesel), but yet the combustion is able to complete rapidly. The footage was taken using a standard lens / high speed camera, simply by changing a side plate (normally aluminum) with one made of quartz.
