Inspired by the caustics from a coffee cup sitting in direct sunlight, I put together this little Nuke composite. I filmed the caustics on a black background as a practical element to use for the organic energy beams to be emitted from my eyes.
I tracked the corners of my eyes and used this data throughout the composite; to easily rotoscope the shapes of my eyes; to matchmove the energy beams to the motion of my head; and to apply the digital makeup around my eyes.
Subtle kaleidoscope effects laid on top of my irises were created using a pan and tile type of technique in Nuke's 3D environment. The caustics "energy" footage was placed onto cards and arranged/mirrored to create the kaleidoscope pattern.
Both pieces of footage were filmed at 1280 x 720 @50 fps on my Canon 550D/T2i.
