This movie shows a smectic liquid crystal film, rather like a soap film, convecting when a small voltage is applied between its two edges. The film is about 2 mm wide and less than 1 micron thick. Under reflected white light, it shows a pink interference color which is uniform over its area, indicating that it is uniform in thickness. It is also backlit with a laser and seeded with small dust particles so you can see the flow. The motion becomes unsteady at about five times the critical voltage for the onset of convection. The movie is in real time.
