Dr Jalid Sehouli of the Charité Comprehensive Cancer Center, Berlin, Germany, talks about how you can prepare for chemotherapy or surgery. He recommends that 2 to 3 weeks prior to treatment, patients should engage in daily light exercise, as well as ensuring a balanced and nutritional diet. Based on previous studies, your level of fitness and nutrition can have a significant impact on length of hospital stay post surgery, overall survival and general treatment outcomes in cancer patients. Dr Sehouli suggests that you should look at your fitness and activity levels before your diagnosis and strive to go back to this (assuming you were active and lead a healthy lifestyle). In terms of diet, avoid extreme ones. If you are unsure what types or level of intensity of exercise you should be aiming for, talk to your doctor or nurse and ask for tailored advice.
