Dell’Arte International Company and School of Physical Theatre is located on the ancestral territory of the Wiyot Tribe. In 2015, Dell’Arte staff and Tribal administrators met to discuss ways that we can share knowledge between the two entities.
In February 2016, an arts engagement project began with the Wiyot Tribe's Tsek Houdaqh ("where the children are") afterschool program at the Table Bluff Reservation. Dell'Arte faculty member Zuzka Sabata, Technical Director and Shadow Puppet expert James Hildebrandt, and recent MFA graduates Sarah McKinney and Kaitlen Osborn introduced the magic of shadow puppetry to the youth. The young people made their own shadow puppets and performed in a play adapted from the Wiyot story "The Stolen Salmon." The shadow play included images as well as words in Wiyot, serving as a vehicle for the story and language learning. Look for a performance of “The Stolen Salmon” during Wiyot Days this fall.
