The SORT2save KIT – phase 1 is a free online, multimedia resource providing elementary schools with all the materials needed to successfully implement a student-led Cafeteria Ranger Program. Students take on leadership roles in the cafeteria, overseeing all sorting, recycling and composting after meals, saving resources and working towards a zero waste, healthy future to benefit communities locally and globally.
Via a rotating system, all students have the opportunity to be Cafeteria Ranger. At the end of each lunch period, student Rangers oversee all recycling and sorting of food scraps and packaging – a hands-on service-learning opportunity. Students practice communication, leadership, and recycling/sorting skills as a daily ritual, while ensuring that all procured “green” items, recyclables, compostables and food scraps remain as resources.
