The 'Bulgers' were the first climbers to identify Washington's 100 Highest Peaks and then go out and climb them. After summiting all of Washington's 9000+ peaks in my early sixties I heard about the 'Bulger List' and was soon hooked. As the 2006 climbing season slipped away I still needed Ptarmigan Peak, a remote summit in the Paysaten Wilderness near the Canadian border, to complete the list. The weather in early September was good but all the trails into Ptarmigan were closed due to a widespread wild fire - the Tatoosh Buttes fire. This is Part 1.
