Olaf Breuning ist bekannt für seine eindrücklichen Bildwelten und ironischen Betrachtungen unserer medial geprägten Wirklichkeit. Seine Fotografien, Videos, Zeichnungen und Installationen bedienen sich einer kollektiven Bildsprache und vermengen Zeichen der Pop- und Medienwelt mit Ikonen der Hochkultur. Zwischen Humor und schmerzlichem Ernst führen sie Konsumverhalten, westliche Stereotype und Geschlechterklischees vor Augen und verhandeln das Verhältnis von Kunst und Kitsch, Realität und Täuschung, Authentizität und Künstlichkeit. Das NRW-Forum Düsseldorf widmet dem in der Schweiz geborenen und in New York lebenden Künstler vom 11. Juni bis 21. August 2016 auf über 600 Quadratmetern die bisher größte Retrospektive mit allen wichtigen Werkzyklen der vergangenen 15 Jahre.

Olaf Breuning is known for his impressive pictorial worlds and his ironic views on a reality that is shaped by the media. His photographs, videos, drawings and installations make use of a shared visual language and mix symbols from the world of pop and the media with icons of high culture. Somewhere between humour and a painful seriousness, they make us aware of our consumerism, Western stereotypes and gender clichés and analyse the relationship between art and kitsch, reality and illusion, authenticity and artificiality. Over a space of more than 600 square metres, the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf will dedicate the biggest retrospective to date, including all important work cycles from the past 15 years, to the Swiss-born artist now living in New York. It is the first solo exhibition curated by Alain Bieber as artistic director of the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf.
