Sesame Street - WHEN FAMILIES GRIEVE, PBS 2010

Andrew Ames

When Families Grieve is a one-hour Sesame-branded primetime special that illuminates how children of military and civilian families cope with one of the greatest challenges they will ever face: the death of a parent. Hosted by Katie Couric, it aired nationally on PBS in April 2010.

This special gives voice to children as they struggle with painful and complex feelings, and helps surviving parents and caregivers to better understand their children’s many unasked questions and thoughts. It also arms families across America with much-needed strategies, tips and resources to help include children in the healing process, to help them grieve, and to also learn to celebrate the memory of their deceased parent. For the rest of us, this program hits home because all families must at some point come face to face with loss. When Families Grieve received a Primetime Emmy nomination.
