For the record, between 1991 and 2006, I have tried three times to apply for a part-time position to work as a photographer for Amsterdam's only public newspaper, "The Recorder". They have turned me down all three times. Either they were not interested in even looking at my work, or the staff at the paper just lack any knowledge of artistic creativity.
Or is it because I'm a Generation X-er?
Whatever their reason, this is Amsterdam, NY. This is a city where its residents show little or no respect for the artistic society. And being inspired by the legends of modern photojournalism, like Alfred Eisenstadt, Walter Ioose and Annie Leibovitz, Amsterdam, NY is one small city that doesn't or no longer show support for someone like myself who dares to dream big of one day becoming this next great artist with such a creative vision.
In Part 5, all of this will explain how far Amsterdam has come without this support.
