BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY-
Stories of massive parties at Bloomsburg are legendary. So are some of the infamous incidents of underage drinking and even riots. They've been well-documented over the past few years. Well now there's more negative attention on the university.
According to witnesses, hundreds of people were at an off-campus fraternity party around 11 Tuesday night. That's when police moved in to the Delta Phi fraternity house at 387/389 Lightstreet Road in Bloomsburg.
Eric Bower of BloomUToday.com provided video to Eyewitness News. It shows state and local police, the fire department - even local DPW crews - involved in this coordinated raid.
Police were on the scene processing party-goers until nearly 3:00 A.M. In all they arrested 61 people for underage drinking. Most of those are Bloomsburg students.
A huge crowd of on-lookers gathered to see what was going on. They watched as police, with the help of town DPW workers, confiscated refrigerators full of beer and loaded them into trucks.
Bloomsburg police say criminal charges will be filed against the Delta Phi members who hosted the party. Those charges will include furnishing alcohol to minors.
A Bloomsburg University spokesperson tells Eyewitness News the university is "very concerned about this incident." The students will face an on campus judicial process. That will likely result in community service and the completion of an alcohol probation program.
In addition the university has suspended the operations of the Delta Phi fraternity pending further investigation.
