"Cultura Within," by Angelica Sibrian
Latinos are one of the fastest-growing ethnic minority groups in the United States. Yet they have the lowest college graduation rate of any racial or ethnic group in the USA. College graduation is directly tied to earning opportunities, so unless college graduation rates for Latino students increase, poverty rates will continue to rise for this community. Cultura Within, focuses specifically on young Latina women in higher education—who must overcome many barriers— through the intentional use of transitional object-making. Learn how community-centered design principles can initiate dialogue about culture, identity and race in educational institutions.
Angelica Sibrian is a designer, facilitator and artist interested in community-centered design. She is pursuing an MFA at UT-Austin, where her current research focuses on the marginalization and underrepresentation of Latinas in higher education.
