In Athletes, Opioids & Addiction, Dr. Ruth Potee guides athletes, parents and coaches on how to treat sports injuries while reducing or eliminating the use of opioid-based pain relievers.
As Dr. Potee explains, better understanding of the teen brain has shed light upon teenagers’ need for physical outlets and impulse toward thrill seeking.
These factors make sports an excellent emotional, mental and physical outlet.
Yet, playing sports presents its own risks.
Many athletes suffer at least a minor injury at some point in their careers. Injuries increase the risk of exposure to opioids for treatment. Use of opioids increases the risk of addiction.
